Legends about the Great Wall of China have been brought to life on stage by the China National Theatre for Children.

"The Legend of the Great Wall" begins with the famous tale of Lady Meng Jiang, a woman whose husband died building the Great Wall. She was so distraught about his death, her ceaselessly flowing tears wore away at a part of the wall until it collapsed, killing her. Lady Meng's son is filled with hatred for the construction campaign that took the lives of his parents. But he soon learns about its importance for the nation's peace and security, and decides to begin working on its construction.

"It's a story about strength, courage, and wisdom," said the play's director, Wang Xiaoying.

The play has a striking visual appeal thanks to its innovative set design that "moves and excites young theatregoers," said Wang. "As soon as they step into the theater, they would feel like they're entering a fairyland, adorned with rolling and lush green mountains and flowing clouds."

"The Legend of the Great Wall" will be on stage in Beijing until the end of the month.
