After Manchester United were thrashed 4-0 by Everton and Tottenham dropped points at Manchester City, it was a perfect chance for the Gunners to move closer to a top four finish and a Champions League spot.
However, a goal from Christian Benteke, his first in almost a year, opened the scoring for Palace.
Mesut Ozil equalised just after the re-start, only for the visitors to retake the lead through Wilfried Zaha on the hour mark.
James McArthur made it 3-1, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put the hosts back within one.
The victory has ensured another season of Premier League football for Roy Hodgson's side.
