Sustainability awareness raised among children in Stockholm

Old newspapers, paper boxes, sticks, trees, bottles... you name it.

Almost everything in the daily recycling circle has been used here on the Stockholm Preschool Day near the city Library.

Hundreds of preschool children have taken part in the event, presenting their ideas on how to make Stockholm an even more sustainable city.

Dita Johansson with the Matteuse preschool in Stockholm says her children, who range in age from 1 to 5 years old, take a keen interest in the program.

"We show everything we have been doing together with children for the whole year, the autumn and the spring. It's all the exploring that children have done together with their teachers all the year; in Matteuse we are working with the sustainable resources, it's a lot about exploring water, growing, and all like that, all that you can see here. "

On top of recycling, the young students are also given a chance to make small boats using pine tree bark.

They've also helped create a paper-mache whale.

Kadije is another preschool teacher helping guide her students through the activities.

"It is a big day for our children today. So everybody comes here to take part in activities, all about what we do in the school and we present them here. And everybody comes here and have a look. Bokstaver like A, B, C , we learn our children from one to three years, so we teach them how to write their name and numbers, you know. "

Older children have also been given a chance to take part.

Select middle school students have put on singing and dancing performances.

Organizers of the events say they hope to instill the idea of sustainability into the students at an early age, with the goal of making sustainability a normal part of their daily lives.
