India test-fired its supersonic BrahMos cruise missile from a fighter jet for the first time on Wednesday, the Defense Ministry said.

The precision-guided missile was launched from a Russian-made Sukhoi-30MKI combat aircraft belong to the Indian Air Force's frontline combat team at the Bay of Bengal against a sea-based target, the ministry said.

"The successful maiden testfiring of Brahmos Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM) from Su-30MKI will significantly bolster the Indian Air Force's air combat operations capability from standoff ranges," the ministry said.

The Air Force version of BrahMos missile was developed jointly by India and Russia. It has a strike range of 290 km and can carry conventional warhead up to 300 kg.
