Celebrations for the 70th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China concluded with tens of thousands of doves and balloons released to the sky, and participants singing in chorus "Ode to the Motherland."
12:38
Now, 70 thousand doves are being released. They take to the sky with the appearance of a beautiful Chinese brush painting. How magnificent and poetic!
12:35

Fly a streamer and say bon voyage! The “China” ship in this formation is cleaving its way through the waves and forging ahead in the vast ocean of the world, bearing the hopes and dreams of 1.4 billion Chinese people.

12:31

The formation for “Remain True to the Founding Mission” features statues of outstanding communist party members from different generations, including Jiao Yulu, Kong Fansen, and Yang Shanzhou. The Party’s commitment to serve the people will never waver.

12:29

Coming up next is the formation representing “Strict Party Governance”. It includes floats representing model Party members, highlighting the party’s achievements in promoting clean governance.

12:27
This song you’re hearing now is called “millennial promise.” It’s accompanying the formation for a “Community with A Shared Future for Mankind”. It consists of many young people from home and abroad.
12:23

This formation is headed by a float resembling Kun Peng – a mythical bird from ancient Chinese folklore. With its wings spread and ready to fly, Kun Peng symbolizes the Chinese people lifting off into a great new era thanks to the accumulated hard work of many generations.

12:20
The “Lucid Waters and Lush Mountains” formation is made up of people who work at the forefront of ecological management. China is enforcing the most stringent rules for environmental protection, providing massive financial support, and promoting the concept of a “green lifestyle” in a wide range of areas, from garbage sorting to river management.
12:18
What makes for a beautiful life? It’s the clean streets that are thanks to the hard work of sanitation workers; it’s the fast and easy logistics services provided by delivery men; and it’s the care shown by doctors and nurses. The most beautiful life is also one that has the love of family, the energy and spirit that comes from active senior citizens, and easy public access for people with special needs.
12:17
In the formation going past now are the heads of many of the villages which are the key targets of the task of eliminating extreme poverty by 2020, which China is determined to see through.
12:16

China is proud of its glorious achievements in sport. A nationwide work-out campaign has been embraced, and preparations for the 2022 Winter Olympics are well underway, with winter sports gaining popularity among the Chinese people.

12:14

The next formation coming up carries the theme of “setting a high moral standard to educate young people.”

Students and teachers are marching to a song of youth, with the flags of their schools carried proudly in their hands.

12:14

Here comes the “Chinese Culture” formation. The music, dancing, and opera singing on display highlights the diverse cultures of the Chinese nation.

The nation’s rejuvenation relies not only on material strength, but also on its flourishing culture.

12:13

A nation builds its dreams by drawing on the strength of the country, and the country draws its strength from the conviction of its people. The formation representing China’s “Great Conviction” is approaching. Xi Jinping thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era lends a powerful spiritual strength to the nation.

12:11

Our country is made up of 56 ethnic groups. People from these different ethnic groups have joined hands as they dance and sing on the floats representing “National Solidarity.”

12:09

Accompanied by the music used when swearing the oath of allegiance, the “Democracy and Rule of Law” formation is coming up next.

The floats depict the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China, supported by a great golden hand, under the arched roof of the Great Hall of the People. This symbolizes our resolve to safeguard the democracy of the people, and to protect the dignity and authority of the country’s constitution and law.

12:09

Rural entrepreneurs, role models, and farmers come together for the “Rural Rejuvenation” formation. The floats depict the beautiful scenery found in the countryside in the new era.

12:09

The “Regional Coordination” formation is made up of four dragon boats, representing the connectivity that has boosted the country’s coordinated development strategy.

12:08

Science and technology are the primary productive forces, and innovation is the principal engine that propels development. Advancing towards us is the formation made up of representatives from the science and technology sectors.

12:02

The third chapter of the mass pageant is the “Great Rejuvenation”. It’s made up of 18 formations, featuring a huge portrait of President Xi Jinping and a placard of slogans.

Since the 18th Party Congress, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, united the Party and the people of all of the country’s ethnic groups in accomplishing great national projects, establishing Xi Jinping thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, and pushing forward the great cause of the nation and the party to achieve historic new advances.

12:01

The familiar tune of “Beijing Welcomes You” takes us back to the summer of 2008, when the 100-year dream of hosting the Olympics came true.

During the event in China's capital, 43 world and 132 Olympic records were set with 87 different countries and regions winning medals.

12:00

A group of medical workers, soldiers and officers, and volunteers who participated in the fight against SARS, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, join those who were part of the rescue and relief work during the Wenchuan earthquake, and make up the formation, “Fighting in Unison”

11:59

We can now see the formation carrying a huge picture of former President Hu Jintao and the slogan “Scientific Outlook on Development” approaching. Members of the Communist Party of China, with Comrade Hu Jintao as their leading representative, united the Party and the people of all of the country’s ethnic groups, and created the concept of the Scientific Outlook on Development, which has created a comprehensive design for socialism with Chinese characteristics, successfully seta new historical starting point for the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

11:57
Time flies with the passing of the days and the nights. In the formation “Spanning the Century” is a sundial radiating golden brilliance. Where has the time gone? It has been devoted to labour, pioneering work, and hard struggle that span a century.
11:56

The “One Country, Two Systems” formation is approaching. Chinese people in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan join other parade participants in waving flags and sending happy birthday greetings to their motherland.

11:55
Now approaching us is a formation carrying a huge picture of former president Jiang Zemin and the slogan “Keeping Pace with the Times”. Members of the Communist Party of China, with Comrade Jiang Zemin as their leading representative, united the Party and the people of all of the country’s ethnic groups, and created the important theory of the “Three Represents”, safeguarding socialism with Chinese characteristics in the face of severe tests, and making a breakthrough with regard to the reform and opening-up, which successfully pushed socialism with Chinese characteristics into the 21st century.
11:54

Time is money, and time and tide wait for no one. The People’s Republic has accelerated the advancement of its reform and opening-up.

In the formation “Rolling Spring Tide,” the images of buildings constructed in Shenzhen and Xiamen, along with other special economic zones, are tokens of the epic accomplishments achieved through the reform and opening-up.

11:53

China’s revolution began in the rural areas. That’s also where China’s reforms made its first breakthroughs.

The “Field of Hope” formation is made up of people who took the lead in rural reform in the villages in Xiaogang of Anhui Province and Anji of Zhejiang Province, along with representatives of our farmers. As they approach us, we see them enjoying the joy of the harvest.

11:50

Approaching us now is the formation called “Vital Decision”, which is centered on a huge portrait of Comrade Deng Xiaoping.

Members of the Communist Party of China, with Comrade Deng Xiaoping as their leading representative, united the Party and the people of all of the country’s ethnic groups, and led them in developing Deng Xiaoping Theory, launching the historic policy of reform and opening-up, confirming the basic line of the primary stage of socialism in China, and successfully embarking on the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

11:50

The rush of cyclists on Chang’an Avenue is a youthful memory of a generation. The young people riding their bicycles are reviving memories of the past, starting the first performance march, “Long Live Our Youth.”

11:48

The “Arduous Struggles” formation is now approaching. Names such as Wang Jinxi and Shi Chuanxiang are forever engraved in our minds. Thanks to the self-reliance and diligent work of the people, the People’s Republic, which used to be poor and barren, became stronger and stronger thanks to the people’s determined efforts.

11:45
The members of the formation, “The People Run the Country”, are dancing and waving red ribbons in a demonstration of the joy of hundreds of millions of Chinese people who began to take control of the running of their country.
11:44

Crowding around a huge portrait of Mao Zedong and banners, the “Founding of the People’s Republic” formation is coming towards us now.

Members of the Communist Party of China, with Comrade Mao Zedong as their leading representative, developed Mao Zedong Thought, united the Party and the people of all of the country’s ethnic groups, and led them to complete the New Democratic Revolution and the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The development of the Chinese nation has since entered a new era.

The Chinese people have stood up!

11:44

In the formation “Fierce Battles,” medals representing the founding of the army, independence and freedom, and liberation, are shining on each of the three arriving floats. The gold medals and red ribbons are tokens of the epic accomplishments achieved through arduous struggle.

11:42

Here come the five formations representing the theme, the Founding of the People’s Republic. Leading this group is the formation called “A New World.”

11:41

What you are hearing is Ode to the Red Flag. Now 21 floats are coming this way. Carried aboard the floats are representatives of the families of older generations of party, state, and military leaders who served this country in the early years of the People’s Republic of China. Also on the floats are outstanding individuals who have made great contributions to the country’s development. Some of them joined the revolution prior to the founding of the People’s Republic.

11:38

A total of 2,019 young people make up the year and the national emblem formations. From 1949 to 2019, the national emblem, a symbol of our great country, has solemnly represented the dignity and strength of the nation.

11:36

Here come the first formations, showcasing the national flag, the year 2019, and the national emblem, as well as respected individuals who have made great contributions to the founding and development of the country. The national flag is represented by 1,949 young people holding a giant national flag, which was first raised here 70 years ago when the People’s Republic of China was founded.

11:36

Now, the mass pageant begins. Two little children will lead the chorus: Happy Birthday, my motherland.

11:29

That’s for the weaponry and equipment formations. Now time to tilt our heads skyward. Here come the air echelons. All together 11 airborne echelons will pass above the Tiananmen Square.

We’ll see an improved combat system that includes warning, reconnaissance, long-range strike, strategic delivery, reinforcement, and support.

11:18

The last module in the weaponry and equipment segment of this parade, the Strategic Strike Module, is edging towards the center stage.

11:17

The Logistics Support Module is upon us. In this parade, the Logistics Support Module will feature a supplies formation and an equipment support formation.

11:14

Next up, the unmanned combat module is approaching the Tiananmen Rostrum, this is the first time drones, unmanned surveillance planes and bombers are seen in the military parade.

11:13

The fourth formation is led by Major Generals Deng Hongqin and Jin Feng.

The reconnaissance and navigation vehicles can quickly obtain, process and transmit information about combat environments, including survey in terrain and topography, weather monitor and forecast. This is crucial for commanders in decision-making.

11:13

The next formation is led by Major Generals Sun Baotai, and Jing Xianfang.

The third formation in Information Warfare module consists of telecommunications vehicles, the ears and eyes of troops. The divisions in this formation date back to the Nanchang Uprising in 1927, one of the earliest military operations led by the Communist Party of China. Back then, the revolutionaries relied on a modest radio to fulfill their communication demand.

11:12

Major Generals Li Fayi and Yang Xiaokang are leading the second formation.

The second formation in Information Warfare module consists of jamming vehicles. The new electronic equipment can be easily deployed and mobilized in complex electro-magnetic environments, allowing troops to gain an upper hand.

11:10

The information warfare module consists of four formations.

The first is led by Major Generals Xu Guiming and Meng Fanhao. The equipment is designed to capture information quickly. It’s able to perform tasks independently, and support other troops.

11:10

Next is the field operation air defense missile formation, led by Major Generals Zhang Fan and Pei Xiaochang.

There are HQ-17A and HQ-16B missiles. These are known for their high level of mobility and rapid reaction. Advanced accuracy means they are ready to intercept any target.

11:10

Major Generals Zhu Rui and Dong Yujiang are leading the second formation of surface-to-air missile.

Eight HQ-12A missiles and four HQ-6 missile launchers are on display. Combined together, they can defend against targets coming from various ranges and altitudes. Their predecessors were present at the first parade in the history of PRC. Historically, they were responsible for securing the air space of the nation’s capital Beijing.

11:09

Here’s the first formation of surface-to-air missiles led by Major Generals Liu Mingbao and Han Xianfeng.

We are looking at HQ-9B and HQ-22 missiles. They are capable of intercepting multiple airstrike weapons in a complex electro-magnetic environment. As early as 1969, the processor of surface-to-air missiles shot down a high-altitude surveillance plane. Today, they are still pushing for stronger air defense.

11:09

Major Generals Li Guoping, Zhang Lei are leading the formation of the early warning radar.

The early warning radars are currently folded and mounted on the back of heavy-duty trucks; once unfolded, they go up as tall as a three-story building. This new generation of radar can detect and locate stealth airplanes and missiles.

11:08

Next up, the Ship-based Air Defense Weapons, led by Major Generals Liu Hongwei, and Zhang Baojun.

We are looking at HHQ-9B, HQ-16, and HQ-10 missiles, and phalanx close-in weapon system. Together they make a complete defense system, capable of firing 10,000 shots in a minute. With that frequency, the system can intercept enemy missiles and support naval and land battle groups.

11:07

And behind them is the formation of ship-to-ship and submarine-to-ship missiles led by Major Generals Liu Jie and Jiang Ping.

These long-range YJ-18 and YJ-18A missiles, the color of silver-grey, are developed for both power and accuracy. They are the new generation of anti-ship cruise missiles.

11:07

Coming up next is the shore-to-ship missile formation, led by Admirals Wang Xianfeng, and Wu Yuhong.

Unlike most other maritime combat units, the YJ-12B missiles are sporting forest camouflage, to give them increased protection. These can hit large and medium-size ships. They are an important part of the coastal defense system.

11:06

Next up, the Armed Police Anti-terrorism formation, led by Major Generals Liu Xingli and Wang Zaifa.

The assault vehicles and explosion-proof armored vehicles are highly mobile and versatile. The personnel are equipped with integrated combat systems, such as night vision goggles, assault rifles, grenade launchers, communication devices and person computers.

11:06

Here comes the Special Equipment formation, led by Major Generals Tian Yue and Wang Xinmin.

Equipped with heavy machine guns, grenade launchers, the combat vehicles are suitable for operations on all terrains. And the auto-gyro aircraft are used in complex battle environments. The equipment system can achieve fast delivery of weapons and forces, crucial in surprise attacks.

11:06

Here comes the Anti-tank Missile formation, led by Major Generals Zou Meiyu and Li Zhenling.

The HJ-10 missile system allows precision attack on ground targets beyond unaided vision. It’s also used against low-altitude, low-speed flying targets. To date, the PLA has developed an anti-tank equipment system that features diversified launching types, ranges, and guidance systems.

11:05

Up next, the Self-propelled Gun formation, led by Major Generals Zhang Jianfeng  and He Jikang.

The artillery can provide long-range suppressing fire, precision strike, and information-based combat. Also in the formation are the Type-155 vehicle-carried gun-howitzers, a new suppressing fire system that gives stronger fire, higher precision and mobility.

11:05

This is the airborne fighting vehicle formation, led by Major Generals Qiu Huolin, and Chen Tao.

The vehicle can be air-dropped to the front lines. It is used in a joint combat system. With airborne fighting vehicles, and the machine gun and anti-tank features onboard, our paratroopers will be covered by adequate fire support the minute they touch ground.

11:03

Following is the amphibious fighting vehicle formation, led by Major Generals Zhu Chuansheng and Sha Chenglu.

The 05A amphibious assault armored vehicle is competent in land operations, off-shore sailing, and beach assaults. They provide extra firepower and protection in landing operations.

11:03

Up next is the formation of light-armed vehicles led by Major Generals Kuang Dewang and Wang Yongsheng .

The 04A tracked IFVs and the 15 Light Tanks are highly mechanized and mobile. Their ability to respond rapidly to potential threats has them on the frontline of emergency land battles. They are particularly adaptable to terrain with lots of rivers and mountains, like that in South China.

11:01

22 tanks sporting desert camouflage are rumbling past the Tiananmen Rostrum. Leading the tank formation is Major General Li Ming.

These 99-A tanks are China’s main battlefield tanks with advanced fire power ability and defense capability. They are independently developed by China. 70 years ago at the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the People’s Liberation Army had no tanks made in China. In 70 years, our defense capability has come a long way and these 99-As are here today to prove it.

10:58
As the last of the 15 infantry formations walk past the Central Axis, the weaponry and equipment formations are moving in. For this year’s parade, the weaponry and equipment formations are grouped in several modules, to keep up with the latest development in modern warfare.
10:57

Coming up is the formation representing China’s UN peacekeepers. They are led by Major Generals Xu Youze and Ma Baochuan.

China contributes the most troops among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. There are over 2,500 Chinese serving in 7 mission fields, with 8,000 people reserved for overseas dispatch. 13 Chinese peace-keepers have sacrificed their lives in foreign lands.

10:56

Coming up is the Militia Division, led by Zhao Bingqing and Liao Weiwei.

The Militia consists of women from different fields in Beijing, including civil servants, college teachers and medical professionals. They are a vital complementary force to the army, receiving regular training to maintain their combat capabilities. By the way, the daughter of one of our CRI colleagues is marching in the front row. Her parents must be so proud to see her.

10:56

Up next is the Military Reserve Division, led by Senior Colonel Gao Xinjiang and Reservist Senior Colonel Xu Zhengang.

The Reserve is a key component of China’s national defense. The Reserve conducts regular training to drive its reform and promote integrated development of reserve and active forces. China is streamlining the number of primary militia nationwide, driving deeper reform of militia and reserve forces in their size, structure and composition.

10:55

Next up, the Civilian Personnel Division, led by Wang Haitao and Wang Huayan.

The Civilian Personnel Division is one of several formations making their first appearance at the military parade. They were established in the military reform, as the armed forces called for the recruitment of outstanding talent across various fields. They apply their specialized knowledge and experience.

10:54
Now comes the Researchers Division, led by Major Generals Yi Shuqiang and Luan Fuxin. These researchers come from multiple military institutes – the National University of Defense Technology, PLA Academy of Military Science, and PLA National Defense University. The division cultivates military talent, in its mission to advance the strategy of strengthening the army through Science and Technology.
10:53

Here come the female soldiers, led by Major Generals Cheng Xiaojian and Tang Bing, with 325 soldiers from various service organizations, armed police, and troops.

Chinese women can be seen alongside their male counterparts in the front line of disasters alleviation, guard points, and every aspect of the armed forces.

10:53

Next up, the PLA Armed Police, led by Major Generals Zhao Dongfang and Zhang Weiguo.

The Armed Police work in safeguarding national security and public wellbeing as a support to the Party and the people. They perform multiple functions in maintaining social stability. In the latest reform, the Armed Police have been placed under the leadership of the Central Military Committee.

10:53

Coming up is the Joint Logistics Support Force, led by Major Generals, Liu Xiangdong and Ren Yanbing.

This is also their first appearance in a parade at the Tiananmen Square.  As Chinese saying goes: supplies and logistics must be in place before the forces are mobilized. Today logistics support is just as important as modern warfare requires tremendous supplies of energy and resources.

10:52

Coming up is the Strategic Support Force, led by Major Generals Wang Xuewu and Kang Huaihai.

Strategic Support is making its first appearance in the National Day parade. It’s a new type of combat force established in the latest reform to maintain national security. It is specialized in cyber, space and electronic warfare. The Strategic Support Force consists of supporting forces for battlefield environment, information, communications, information security, and new technology testing.

10:51

Now comes the PLA Rocket Force. Leading the team are Major Generals Xue Jinfeng and Zhang Fengzhong.

The purpose of the Rocket Force is to strengthen China’s strategic-deterrence capabilities, primarily nuclear deterrence, through precision strikes with dual-use nuclear and conventional missiles. The strategic missile brigade is one of the army’s pillar combat forces.

10:51

Coming up is the Air Force led by Major Generals Jing Tao and Zhao Yongyuan.

The Air Force formation consists of aviation, ground air defense, radar, airborne and electronic countermeasures arms units. This year, the Air Force turns 70. Its mandate is to become a modern and strategic air force that integrates aviation and space power, with enhanced strike and defense capabilities.

10:50

Now the PLA Navy. Leading the team are Admirals Zhou Minggui and Liang Xu.

The PLA Navy is an important force in protecting China’s territorial waters and supporting island combat. Over the years, the Navy has expanded its mission to include comprehensive combat at sea, strategic deterrence and counterattack safeguarding the sovereign rights and interests at sea, and protecting strategic passageways.

10:49

Up next is the PLA Army, or Ground Force, led by Major Generals Lin Xiangyang and Tang Xinghua.

The PLA Ground Force traces its origins to 1927. It’s the largest and oldest branch of the armed forces. It’s been charged with the strategic requirement of the mobile operations and multi-dimensional offense and defense. That means raising its capabilities for precise, multi-dimensional, trans-theater, multi-functional and sustainable operations.

10:49

Next up is the Leader Command Division. It’s led by Major Generals Jiang Guoping and Chen Zuosong with 27 generals and 325 majors and lieutenants from the Central Military Commission organ system, five Theater Commands, and armed police.

The mission of the Leader Command Division is to showcase the new vitality of the PLA military commands after structural reforms. They also receive tougher training under the policy of “training commanders before training soldiers”.

10:47

The first to appear is the PLA Guard of Honor, holding the CPC flag, the national flag and the PLA flag.

The People’s Liberation Army under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, safeguards national interests for the country, and public wellbeing for the People. The PLA has five professional service branches: The Ground Force, the Navy, the Air Force, the Rocket Force and the Strategic Support Force.

10:46

In the sky on top of the Tiananmen Square, an airborne echelon of 20 helicopters form a huge Arabic number seventy. Meanwhile on the ground, 15 infantry formations are moving into position. They are selected from joint operation commanding organizations, and different troops, universities, and scientific academies. In the formation for researchers, around 70% of the participants have master’s degrees or higher.

10:45

Today’s parade will demonstrate the result of the latest round of military reform. Many newly established divisions of the PLA will appear in the parade for the first time, including the Strategic Support Force and Joint Logistics Support Force. The Civilian Personnel Division and China’s peacekeepers will also show up.

10:44

The commander of the parade has announced the beginning of the march-past.

Today’s celebrations are accompanied by the PLA Central Military Band, about 1,300 instrumentalists selected from all branches of the armed forces. Today they will play more than 50 pieces of music to go with the celebrations.

10:20

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered the start of a military review at Tian'anmen Square Tuesday morning to mark the 70th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China.

Standing in a black open-roof Red Flag limousine, Xi gave the order to the commander-in-chief of the military parade.

The Chinese nation has since embarked on the broad path of great national rejuvenation," Xi said.
10:15
"Right at this moment, Chinese people of all ethnic groups and all the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation at home and abroad take pride in and give our best wishes to our great motherland with great joy," said Xi Jinping.
