Lesson 129 Supermarket (1) 第一百二十九课 超市(1)

Cam: Welcome to a brand new week on Chinese Studio.  Dajia hao, wo shi Cam.
YJ: And wo shi Yajie.  Cam, we’ve learned a few phrases about shopping at the supermarket, but you still have more questions, right?
Cam: Yeah.  I was down at the supermarket the other day, and I was looking for the eggs… but I didn’t know how to say them in Chinese!
Yajie: Then listen up.

Eggs 鸡蛋(ji1dan4) Oranges 桔子(ju2zi).1 litre of milk 一升牛奶. (yi1 sheng1 niu2nai3) I’m looking for the seafood. 我想买海产品。(wo3 xiang3 mai3 hai3 chan3pin3.) The apples are right this way. 苹果就在这边。(ping2guo3 jiu4 zai4 zhe4 bian1) All in today’s Chinese Studio.

Yajie:  Okay Cam… you know what a supermarket is, right?
Cam:  Yes.  It’s chao shi.  And when I am at the chao shi, I need to know where to find the eggs.  How do I say that? 
YJ: Well, for eggs you can say “鸡蛋(ji1dan4)”
Cam: 鸡蛋(ji1dan4)
YJ: Right. 鸡蛋(ji1dan4)
Cam: 鸡蛋(ji1dan4). I often heard the word 鸡肉(ji1rou4), what does that refer to?
YJ: It means the meat of the chicken. 
Cam: Oh. I see. So鸡蛋(ji1dan4) is egg and鸡肉(ji1rou4) is chicken.
YJ: Exactly! 
Cam: then how do you say oranges in Chinese?
YJ: It’s桔子(ju2zi). 
Cam: 桔子(ju2zi).
YJ: Right. J-u, 桔(ju2), the second tone. 
Cam: yajie, I usually drink one litre of milk each day, but what’s the Chinese for that?  
YJ:  it’s一升牛奶. (yi1 sheng1 niu2nai3)
Cam: 一升牛奶. (yi1 sheng1 niu2nai3)
YJ: 一升(yi1 sheng1), 1 litre. 
Cam: 一升(yi1 sheng1)
YJ: milk, 牛奶(niu2nai3)
Cam: 牛奶(niu2nai3)
YJ: 一升牛奶. (yi1 sheng1 niu2nai3)
Cam: 一升牛奶. (yi1 sheng1 niu2nai3), 1 litre of milk.

Conversation 1:

Cam: I’m looking for the seafood.  What’s Chinese for that? Could you please tell me? 
YJ: Of course. You can say 我想买海产品。(wo3 xiang3 mai3 hai3 chan3pin3.) 
Cam: 我想买海产品。(wo3 xiang3 mai3 hai3 chan3pin3.)
YJ: Again, 我 (wo3), I. 
Cam: 我 (wo3)
YJ: 想 (xiang3), want to. 
Cam: 想 (xiang3)
YJ: 买 (mai3), mai, the third tone, to buy. 
Cam: 买 (mai3)
YJ: 海产品(hai3 chan3pin3), seafood. 
Cam: 海产品(hai3 chan3pin3)
YJ: 海 (hai3), means sea. 
Cam: 海 (hai3)
YJ: 产品(chan3pin3), food or products.

YJ: 海产品(hai3 chan3pin3), seafood.

Conversation 2:

Cam: Yajie, sometimes the supermarket is too big to find what I want to buy. I was looking for the apples the other day, and the salesperson told me later I know it means “ the apples are right this way”. But I really want to know the Chinese of it. 
Yajie: I see. you can say 苹果就在这边。(ping2guo3 jiu4 zai4 zhe4 bian1)
Cam: 苹果就在这边。(ping2guo3 jiu4 zai4 zhe4 bian1)
YJ: 苹果 (ping2guo3), apples. 
Cam: 苹果 (ping2guo3)
YJ: 就在(jiu4 zai4) just at someplace,  
Cam: 就在(jiu4zai4)
YJ: 这边(zhe4 bian1), this way.  
Cam: 这边(zhe4 bian1)
YJ: The apples are right this way in Chinese is 苹果就在这边。(ping2guo3 jiu4 zai4 zhe4 bian1) 
Cam: 苹果就在这边。(ping2guo3 jiu4 zai4 zhe4 bian1)

Cam: Yajie, time for our question of the day.
YJ: How do you say “I’m looking for the seafood” in Chinese?
Cam: See ya tomorrow! 
Yajie: Ming tian jian.
