VR复原被毁前的圆明园 VR brings ruined miracle back to life

Yuanmingyuan, or the Old(老) Summer Palace, built(建) in China's Qing Dynasty (1616 - 1911 A.D.), started construction in 1701. Its expansion continued for the next 150 years. Renowned for its extensive collection of gardens, buildings, art and historical treasures, Yuanmingyuan has been dubbed "Garden of Gardens(万园之园)." But the palace was looted(洗劫) and burned(烧毁) in 1860 by British and French troops(军队) during the Second Opium War. 

It is being restored(重建) with cutting-edge virtual reality technology by a group of researchers at the prestigious(著名的) Tsinghua University. The project of Tsinghua University researched more than 10,000 historical files(档案); over 4,000 design charts(图纸) were rehabilitated(复原); and 2,000 digital architecture models(模型) were made. A 80-member(成员) group(组) has spent(花费) 15 years on the project.
80余位专业人员,15年专注于遗产保护,查阅10000余件历史档案,画了4000幅复原设计图纸,造了2000座数字建筑模型……终于通过数字技术(VR)让圆明园这座“万园之园”跨越了310年的时光,再次展现在大家面前。

Now 60% of the digital(数字的) restoration has been completed(完成). The result of the project has been incorporated in the mobile guide system and visual tour system of Yuanmingyuan. It has already been seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors.

"The cultural relics should remain as they are. However, it is a pity that people today don't know how Yuanmingyuan looked like, and that's why we wanted to show the original appearance of the palace," said Guo.
