世界第二大水电站主体开建 The world's second largest hydropower station started construction

Baihetan(白鹤滩) hydropower(水电) station(站) started(开始) construction(建设) in Sichuan on Thursday. Upon its completion(完工), it will be the world's second(第二) largest(大) hydropower station.

Baihetan Hydropower Station is under construction.

Baihetan Hydropower Station is built on the lower reaches(下游河段) of the main stream(干流) of Jinsha River(金沙江).

A total(总计) of four hydropower stations will be built including(包括) this one, and is part of China's West-to-East Electricity(电力) Transmission(传送) Project(工程), which aims to transfer power from the water-rich southwest to the electricity-thirsty east.

The goal(目标) of this project is to maintain(保持) a balance(平衡) between flood control, shipping and sediment(沉积物) control(控制), and to facilitate local economic and social development.
