丽江桃子采摘品尝正当时 Ripe peaches attract tourists to harvest activities

Ripe(成熟的) peaches(桃子) attract(吸引) tourists(游客) to come and pick(采摘) some for themselves ahead of Mid-Autumn festival(中秋节) in Lijiang, southwest China's Yunnan Province. 

Pick-your-own peach fields have attracted tourists to come sample(品尝) the ripe fruit for themselves on September 21, 2017.

The peach is a symbol(象征) of immortality(长生不老) in China, seen as a wish for long life(长寿).

This year, Mid-Autumn festival will fall on October 4th, as it is the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. A holiday for moon worship, it is now usually celebrated by eating(吃) "mooncakes(月饼)" and having outdoor reunions(聚会) with family.

In the old days, a platform for moon worshiping was set up in each house when the Mid-Autumn Festival approached.

The offerings on the platform were mainly mooncakes and sometimes fruits(水果) were added. Fruits were meticulously arranged according to tradition. Peaches and pomegranates(石榴) were traditionally put together, which symbolized big families; chestnuts(栗子) and persimmons(柿子) were arranged together, symbolizing prosperity(兴旺); and longans(桂圆) were sprinkled(撒), meaning family unity.

For families with members far away from home, a bowl(碗) of lotus roots(莲藕) was laid, which expressed that the people away were missed.
