The Beijing city government has announced plans(计划 jìhuà) to legislate garbage(垃圾 lājī) sorting(分类 fēnlèi), following the introduction of similar rules in Shanghai on Monday, reports Beijing News.

Household garbage will need to be sorted into four categories(类别 lèibié): kitchen waste(厨余垃圾 chúyú lājī), recyclable waste(可回收物 kě huíshōu wù), hazardous waste(有害垃圾 yǒuhài lājī), and other waste(其他垃圾 qítā lājī).

Fines(罚款 fákuǎn) for people who fail to follow the new rules will be higher than those faced by rule-breaking residents in Shanghai, where individuals who fail to sort their garbage can be fined up to 200 yuan (about 29 U.S. dollars).

Beijing residents produce(制造 zhìzào) 26,000 tonnes(吨 dūn) of garbage each day, which is 1.1 kilograms per person per day, said Sun Xinjun from the city's urban management commission. All of the city's 29 garbage disposal centers are running at full capacity.

The city introduced household waste management regulations back in 2012 but few people adhere to(遵守 zūnshǒu) the rules because of poor supervision(监管 jiānguǎn) and enforcement(执行 zhíxíng).

Shanghai's new rubbish sorting rules are the strictest in China. On Day 1, the city's law enforcement officers inspected around 1,600 communities, 400 enterprises, 1,800 shops, and 21 hotels, and issued more than 600 warnings(警告 jǐnggào).
