On July 24th, 2012, Sansha in Hainan province became the newest city in the South China Sea, with jurisdiction over the Xisha, Zhongsha, Nansha Islands and about 2 million square kilometers of the sea around them. It is the prefecture-level city with the largest sea area, the smallest land area, and the smallest population in China.
