The species has only been identified in Bhutan, India, Nepal and Yunnan Province. With its peculiar behavior of building large hives under overhangs on the southwestern faces of vertical cliffs at altitudes between 2,500 and 3,000 meters, it is also known as the Himalayan cliff honey bee. One hive can contain up to 60 kg of honey. [Photo: IC]
