25% of South African population living on less than R19 per day

A shocking number of South Africans are living below the food poverty line of R561 a month, and more than half the population lives on less than R1,230, as revealed by the latest Household Affordability Index.

The index showed that approximately a quarter of the population were living on less than R19 a day as of September, and as many as 56% of people were living on less than R41 a day.
