The United States performed worse among the countries included in the survey second only to Iceland, which had smaller gains in life expectancy for males.
Experts are blaming the slowing improvement in life expectancy in the United States on the impact of the financial crash in 2008 and the current opioid epidemic.
The first international study compared life expectancy and mortality rates from 1970 to 2016 in 22 wealthy countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, and those in Western Europe.
