Murphy's death was announced by United Healthcare Workers East. It was verified by the Gerontology Research Group, which manages a database of the longest living humans.
Her daughter Rose Green told Good Morning America that Murphy had a difficult life, having been forced to drink from segregated water fountains and enter stores and restaurants through back doors during the period of intense racial segregation in the United States.
Murphy raised Green and another child by herself after her husband died young. She had several jobs, including work in a hat factory and as a cosmetics seller.
