A Thang-ga exhibition is currently being held in the Cultural Palace of Nationalities in Beijing and will run until September 6. The event is organized by the Beijing Intangible Cultural Heritage Development Foundation and will feature 120 Tang-ga paintings from 100 artists.

Thang-ga is a unique style of painting originating in Tibet. Its history can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Usually mounted on colorful ribbons, Thang-ga features all aspects of Tibetan people's lives.

The paintings are splendid and colorful, thanks to a special kind of pigment. The pigments in Thang-ga are made from rare minerals, including gold, silver and agate, as well as plants like saffron.

Ground down by hand, the beautiful colors can last for hundreds of years.
