The Beijing Municipal Commission of City Management is set to put in place new measures meant to curb the waste management problem in the city. The mayor of Beijing Cai Qi at a research seminar earlier this year pointed out recycling is a crucial part of the city's management. To further improve and strengthen the awareness of recycling in the city, uniform standards must be applied.

15 years ago, Beijing became one of the pilot Chinese cities to implement a rubbish sorting system. Since then recyclable and non-recyclable rubbish bins can be spotted all over the city. In addition, there are over 20,000 rubbish supervisors in about 3700 residential communities in Beijing since May 2010, the job of those rubbish supervisors is to supervise and assist residents sort out their rubbish. But this hasn't helped make any impact due to low public awareness and poor sanitary management initiatives.

Some residents follow waste sorting rules, while others just ignore it. Therefore it's hard for rubbish collectors to put different categories of trash into the right trucks. and all rubbish is thrown in the same truck.

To tackle the problem, the Xicheng district in Beijing plans to increase the number of its garbage collection trucks exclusively for kitchen waste this year. There will be schedule and a fixed time slot for the trucks to pick up rubbish. On top of that, these vehicles are expected to be electric cars, which aims at maintaining a friendly environment.

Now there are still challenges in dealing with garbage sorting and sanitary management, everyone's effort is needed.
