In order to promote collaborative development of sports in the areas of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, a memorandum was signed in Beijing on Dec. 22.
According to the document, these regions will jointly hold competitions to select potential athletes from these areas; excellent athletes from these regions will be able to form teams to attend domestic competitions; they also will be able to participate in international exchange activities in the field of winter sports, basketball, football, volleyball and swimming.
The memorandum also emphasizes the importance of developing winter sports among youth in the region. "We focus more on students from primary schools and middle schools. We plan to hold theme activities in campus, including lectures about Olympic and winter sports," said Tian Jiangong, deputy director of Hebei Provincial Bureau of Sports.
Tian also said that there will be a hundred lectures about winter sports, held in a hundred select schools from across the region. About 10,000 students will attend the lectures. It's hoped these children will talk about what they've learned with their parents, thus spreading knowledge throughout the community.
Furthermore, Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei will take turns hosting a youth sports carnival each year. The first Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Youth Skiing Competition will be held on Dec.29 at Yuyang International Ski Resort, in the Pinggu District of Beijing. Roughly 700 participants are expected.
