An outdoor air purifier in Shaanxi's Provincial capital, Xi'an, has helped reduce average PM2.5 levels within a 10 square kilometer radius by as much as 19%, reports the Shaanxi Broadcasting Corporation.
The 60-meter tall tower was built last year. It is a solar-powered purifying system which is designed to filter out PM2.5, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide – which are the main particles for smog.
The tower is a pilot program created by the Institute for Earth Environment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
More tests will be carried out. But if proven effective, the air purifying systems will be applied nationwide.
