'When will autonomous driving be able to surpass human ability?'

That's the question asked by the general manager of Baidu's Autonomous Vehicle Division, Gu Weihao, in a keynote speech at the International Consumer Electronics Show Asia 2017, in Shanghai on Thursday.

Gu highlighted two of the Chinese tech-giant's major achievements in self-drive technology: The Road Hackers information collection platform, which maps roads and the behavior of other drivers; and the Baidu Computing Unit (BCU), China's first mass produced self-driving car brain.

Gu predicts it'll take another ten years or more to gather enough data for self-driving technology to meet strict safety standards, but adds that Baidu intends to make progress and become the head of the pack.
