Chinese community in UK celebrates 20th anniversary of return of Hong Kong

A reception has been held at the Chinese Embassy in London to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Return of Hong Kong, with more than 200 guests in attendance.

Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to theUK, says in his welcome speech that Hong Kong's return toChinawas a landmark inChina's modern history and it sets a fine example of peaceful resolution of international disputes.

The Chinese ambassador also says that over the past two decades, Hong Kong has maintained its prosperity and stability under the "one country, two systems" policy.China's central government is committed to the policy and hope to enhance Hong Kong’s role as a bridge linkingChinaand theUKas their bilateral relations advance into the "Golden Era".

The Chinese ambassador stresses that while Beijing supports Hong Kong's ties and cooperation with the world, any interference in Hong Kong affairs by any foreign country is firmly opposed.

He says that by recognizing and respectingChina's sovereignty over Hong Kong and the "one country, two systems" policy, Hong Kong will continue to contribute positive energy to the "Golden Era" of China-UK relations.

A dragon boat race was held at London’s Royal Albert Dock on June 25 with over 40 teams competing on River Thames. It was part of a number of events organized by the Chinese community in theUKto mark the 20th Anniversary of the Return of Hong Kong.

In the run up to July 1st, a variety of events are being held by the Chinese community in the UK to mark the 20th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong.

Priscilla To, Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London, is on the organizing committee of these events. She says that there has been great enthusiasm from the Chinese community in theUKto participate in celebration events.

A dragon boat race was held at London’s Royal Albert Dock on June 25 with over 40 teams competing on the Thames  River. And a feast made up of Hong Kong style Poon Choi will be held in London's China Town on July 2nd.
