Former undercover ivory dealer helps Chinese learn about Africa

Columbia University postgraduate Huang Hongxiang has become even busier after a documentary, "The Ivory Game" became nominated for an Oscar. Once serving as an undercover ivory dealer in Africa, the 29-year-old now dedicates himself to helping young people from China learn about Africa through the platform China House, reports thepaper.cn.

In April, 2013 before graduating from Columbia University, Huang joined the China Africa Reporting Project.

His research reports about the international ivory trade drew the attention of Ofir Drori, an Israeli wildlife conservationist.

Huang Hongxiang and Drori teamed up to root out ivory smuggling in Uganda.

Their story has since been turned into a documentary produced by Leonardo Dicaprio.

"The Ivory Game" has been nominated for 'Best Documentary' in the forthcoming Academy Awards.
