After receiving three operations, Yan is now able to use his legs to stand, though he remains paralyzed.

In 2014, Yan won three swimming medals in Sichuan's provincial Paralympic Games.

The 2018 Paralympics will take place following the Olympic Games in Pyongchang, South Korea.
