A zebra crossing painted to look like a crack in the road swimming with dolphins and sharks has sparked debate whether it is art or a danger to public safety, according to a report by Nanguo Metropolis Daily.

Some passersby said that they like the painting on a road in Haikou, the capital city of Hainan Province. "I was instantly attracted by the picture," said one driver. Another person said that the painting could act as a warning for drivers to slow down. But the feedback hasn't all been positive. One person said that the painted zebra crossing could distract drivers and cause an accident, while another said that the painting will age over time and become an eyesore.

The debate has spilled over into social media, with some commentators seeing the crossing as an innovative way to beautify the city, and opponents decrying the potential risks it poses to traffic safety and pedestrians.

The local traffic police have now weighed into the debate, saying that traffic signs and marking should be standardized and avoid strange designs. This view was echoed by experts, who called for a national standard on traffic signs, warning that distracting designs could lead to accidents.
