A 51-year-old woman nearly died after injecting fresh fruit juice directly into her veins. "I thought fruit juice was nutritious but didn't expect it would nearly kill me," the woman was quoted as saying by local newspaper the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald.
The woman, surnamed Zeng, was a patient at a hospital in Hunan Province. She secretly swapped the intravenous fluid prescribed by her doctor with juice made from over 20 different fruits. After she broke out in hives and developed a temperature, she was taken into intensive care for liver, kidney, heart, and lung damage. Doctors said she could have died from multiple organ failures.
Zeng was a fervent believer in home remedies, and had previously tried various folk prescriptions for their supposed health benefits. Her story has captured a lot of attention on social media in China, and doctors have issued warnings to the public not to try unfounded folk remedies.
