Guangdong hospital livestreams surgery for rural doctors

Surgeons at a hospital in Guangdong Province have performed its first surgery to be livestreamed using a combination of 5G networking and 4K video technology, reported local media.

Dr. Wang Linwen, the director of thoracic surgery at the Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital, completed the surgery to repair a thoracic deformity on Monday. The procedure was filmed using 4K ultra-high definition cameras, and the images displayed on a screen at a rural hospital 200 kilometers away.

"…There are many colleagues in remote areas who want to learn [surgical] skills, but it's too hard for them to come here," said Dr. Wang. "Live streaming this operation using these new technologies has enabled this problem to be solved."
