Hong Kong lawmakers support call to establish "Hong Kong Police Day"
Many members of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have voiced their support for calls to declare August 10th "Hong Kong Police Day." The proposal was initiated by a self-organized group dubbed "Hong Kong protection league" on Saturday.

The call, which is considered a way of honoring the great efforts of Hong Kong police in safeguarding the region's peace and stability, comes after a couple of weeks of violence carried out by rioters in Hong Kong.
Elizabeth Quat, a lawmaker of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, says the proposal has been warmly welcomed by people from all walks of life, and some of her friends have actively participated in the campaign by sending cards to the police.
Quat pointed out the Hong Kong police have suffered a lot in recent weeks, and some police officers have had limited time to eat food or go to the bathroom because of working overtime. "The police deserved the support considering the great efforts they have made in safeguarding Hong Kong regardless of the pressures and bitterness that they are faced with," she said.

Alice Mak Mei-kuen, the Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, says the public should applaud the Hong Kong police for their hard work and shouldn't attack them for doing their job.
Peter Shiu Ka-fai, the Vice Chairman of the Liberal Party and a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, also showed support for the proposal to dedicate August 10th to the police. He says this will help provide a platform for members of the public to express their support and respect toward the police. He added that the police are part of the law enforcement department and will always protect people in accordance with the law.
