Accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers has confirmed and apologized for an error that led to "La La Land" being initially announced as this year's Oscar Best Picture winner before movie "Moonlight" was pronounced the actual winner.

PricewaterhouseCoopers, which handles the voting process and award envelopes for the Oscars, says it deeply regrets the "error" and is now investigating how it happened.

During Sunday evening's live broadcast and in perhaps one of the most confusing moments of Oscar history, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced "La La Land" as the winner of Best Picture. However, when the movie's production team was half way through their acceptance speeches, it was revealed on stage that a mistake had been made.

It turned out that the presenters were given the wrong envelope, which was a duplicate copy for the Best Actress award that was earlier given to Emma Stone from “La La Land.”

Of course as one can imagine, there was shock, disbelief and confusion on and off the stage, even for the "Moonlight" team, when director Barry Jenkins and producer Adele Romanski accepted their rightful award.

"I'm not sure what to say. That was really... I'm still not sure if this is real. Thank you to the Academy," said Romanski.

"Moonlight" follows the life of a young black man as he attempts self-discovery while growing up in Miami.
