King Lear, a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, will be staged at the China National Theatre for Children in late April.

The theatre has already set up a cast for King Lear. The theatre company selected seven all-male cast members for the story of the relationship between a father and his three daughters.

Looking to promote classic world literature to young children in China, the theatre is now exploring recreating the tragedy for a younger audience.

The Beijing-based theatre also said in its newsletter that the drama King Lear will be "thought-provoking" and also enables children to feel the charm and power of the play.

Zhang Yan, who directed The Merchant of Venice to great acclaim at the Wuzhen Theatre Festival, is the director of this new production.

The first of nine performances of King Lear will kick off on April 29.
