Hong Kong singer-actress Adia Chan has announced she will play Donna Sheridan in the newest Chinese version of "Mamma Mia!"
"In Hong Kong, I watched both the London and Broadway versions of Mamma Mia! The audience couldn't help but sing along with the performances. But I think as I play Donna Sheridan, I will give this character some Asian characteristics. For example, my portrayal of Donna will be a bit shy."
The first Mandarin-language version of Mamma Mia! opened in Shanghai in 2011. Tian Shui, a well-known musical actress in China, portrayed leading character Donna Sheridan – memorably played by Meryl Streep in the film adaptation.
The newest adaptation will perform in just two cities in China, Beijing and Guangzhou in November.
