A Chinese adaptation of the Broadway musical "Next To Normal" ("近乎正常") recently won the Tianqiao Musical Award for both Best Musical and Best Performer.

The musical award launched in 2014 aims to honor China's original musical productions as well as to introduce world classics into China.

Li Zelin is from the China Society for Musical Studies.

"The production of Chinese musicals blends the elements of western art and culture. The Chinese musicals have grown with innovations, after learning from western musicals. It also inherits and carries forward the traditional culture values."

Chinese original productions "Eternal Love" (牵手) and "I AL You" have also won the Best Musical award. The Cat Who Wished to Be a Man, adapted from a novel of the same name by American writer Lloyd Chudley Alexander, and the Little Prince Musical are also among the award-winning pieces.

The awards are categorized into Best Musical, Best Performer and Best Production.

A dozen musicals were performed at the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center from October to December to enter selections for the Tianqiao Musical Award.
