"So Long, My Son" is among the 17 films vying for the prestigious Golden Bear top prize.
Earlier, Wang said he is trying to reconcile the people and attitudes of his father's era with today's generation, who may have less interest in the past, but are nevertheless shaped by it. And "So Long" picks up on similar themes to his earlier films.
Wang has won awards at previous Berlin Film Festivals with "Beijing Bicycle" in 2001 and "In Love We Trust" in 2008.
In addition, a film from Chinese director Wang Lina "a First Farewell" was also screened Tuesday at Berlin Film Festival.
The film depicts the touching childhood friendship from the perspective of a kid from an ethnic group in northwest China.
