One of the best-selling recording artists in the globalal pop music scene, the singer owned a collection of contemporary art that included works by renowned British artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin.

More than 170 works from his private collection will be auctioned in London on Mar 14. Proceeds from the sale will be used to continue his philanthropic initiatives.

Michael was one of the first Western pop singers to tour China in 1985 when he performed as a member of the duo Wham!. He later embarked on a successful solo career and won prestigious awards, including two Grammy's. In 2008 he was ranked 40th on Billboard's list of the Greatest Hot 100 Artists of All Time.
