Marvel's superheroine film dominates Chinese box office in opening week

Disney and Marvel's first superheroine film "Captain Marvel" has pocketed about 609 million yuan (90.6 million U.S. dollars) at the Chinese mainland box office since it hit screens March 8.

The film grossed 214 million yuan at the box office on its first day in Chinese theaters, according to Maoyan, a major Chinese film database and ticketing platform.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and starring Oscar winner Brie Larson, the film is the 21st installment of the Marvel Universe, as well as the first in the series to feature a female lead.

"Captain Marvel" tells the story of Carol Danvers, who came to earth in a galactic war between two alien races and became one of the most powerful superheroes in the universe while searching for her lost memories.

According to Maoyan, the film's box office sales in China are expected to reach 999 million yuan.
