"Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood" made its splashy premiere Tuesday evening at Cannes. Directed by Quentin Tarantino, the movie is about an actor in TV Westerns and his stunt double in 1960s Los Angeles, set against the backdrop of the Manson family murders.

It's the first time Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have made a feature together, though the two co-starred in a 2015 short directed by Martin Scorsese.

"We truly grew up in this industry together," said DiCaprio. "And kind of our careers broke around the same time. So we haven't been close per se but we have all the same sort of cultural and cinematic references. We know all the same people. So, as soon as Quentin handed us the script and he talked about this duality, two sides of the same coin, this relationship between a stuntman and the sort of struggling actor and how they've created this bond with one another in order to survive in the industry, we kind of fit into those shoes immediately because we know those relationships and we know those dynamics. But, you know, it was incredibly easy. I mean, he gave us this backstory of who we were and our history together and it almost seemed like it was implicitly understood by both of us who these men were."

"Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood" is competing for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival ahead of its theatrical release in July.
