"Dora and the Lost City of Gold" will be released in the US early next month, but it's not a typical live-action remake of an animated favourite.

10 years after the Nickelodeon cartoon that children know and love, "Dora and the Lost City of Gold" forces 16-year-old Dora out of the wilderness and into the concrete jungle for the first time.

Director James Bobin says that while there may be homage to the source material, the story goes well beyond that of the TV show.

"It is a live-action remake, but it's not a remake of the TV show. It's nothing like the TV show," he said. "The TV show, we have nods to the TV show, but the TV show is education for kids. This is a kind of adventure comedy that happens to feature the character of Dora you may know from the TV show. And in fact, plays with the idea that you do who she is and how she would behave if she were a real person".

The film also stars Eugenio Derbez, Danny Trejo, and Isabela Moner as Dora.

"Dora and the Lost City of Gold" will be in U.S. cinemas on August 9.
