Scorsese's hotly anticipated movie stars De Niro as Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran - an American labor official and alleged hitman for the Bufalino organized crime family, who claimed to have murdered union leader James Hoffa (Pacino) in 1975.

The trailer shows De Niro's character talking over the phone to Hoffa, intercut with dramatic scenes from the two men's lives.

It's the first time the two legendary actors have appeared in a feature together since 2008's "Righteous Kill," which came 13 years after they shared the screen in Michael Mann's crime thriller "Heat." The movie also stars Joe Pesci as Russell Bufalino - his first onscreen role in nine years.

"The Irishman" is based on the book "I Heard You Paint Houses" by Charles Brandt and will premiere as the opening night film at the 57th New York Film Festival in September.

The film will be released on Netflix and in select theaters in the fall.
