Movie star Jackie Chan has vowed to guard the national flag, echoing a call made by China Central Television (CCTV) on social media.
CCTV initiated a topic on Sina Weibo stating "the five-star flag has 1.4 billion guards." Chan responded by saying "I'm a guard for our national flag." The topic quickly became the most influential topic on Weibo.
These statements follow egregious acts such as the flinging of the Chinese national flag into the sea, committed by some radical protesters in Hong Kong.
Jackie Chan was soon joined by a number of heavyweights in Hong Kong's entertainment industry, including Jing Wong, Jordan Chan, Shawn Yue and many others.
Earlier, veteran Hong Kong filmmaker Jing Wong voiced his support for Hong Kong police in bringing offenders to justice as soon as possible.
