The rock pillar landscapes of Zhangjiajie are renowned all over the world. Famous American rock climber Alex Honnold once practiced there.

Honnold, recently in Beijing promoting documentary Free Solo, said he was fascinated by the local landscapes in Zhangjiajie when he trained for shooting Free Solo. "It's a pity that the relevant scenes are not covered in this film," added Alex.

The documentary is a portrait of the adventurous climber as he prepares to achieve his ambition of climbing the world's most famous rock - El Capitan in Yosemite National Park - without a rope.

Director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi accompanied Honnold on his China tour. She said the film crew was composed of "professional climbers" and several photographers also hung in the air like rock climbers, hundreds of meters above ground, in order to follow Alex's climbing route.

Earlier, "Free Solo" won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. It is due out in Chinese cinemas on September 6.
