Veteran photographer Gao Yuan, who began taking photographs for rock musicians in China in the 1990s, kicked off a solo exhibition in Beijing on Wednesday.

Look Back into the Sun features over 100 black-and-white photos showing the growth of rock music in China, including portraits of some young artists who have since passed away.

The exhibition attracted crowds of famous pop stars to the opening ceremony. Lao Lang (老狼) is one of them.

"The subtitles for each picture on display today differ from her previous exhibitions. Viewing these photos takes me onto a journey of the rock history in China, into which I also got involved. The giant picture used as a poster for this event records the rise, peak and decline of that era."

Rock in China was first introduced by Cui Jian in 1986. After that, rock bands like Tang Dynasty, Panther, and Hard Stone arrived.

The show will run until November 26th.
