Men's top seed Andy Murray and No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka both withstood tense battles at the start to sweep over their opponents, booking last 16 berths at the 2017 French Open here on Saturday.

Murray clinched the Rio Olympic Games gold medal with a four-set victory over the 29th-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro in the final, and recorded 6-3 in their previous nine meetings.

In a highly-anticipated third round matchup, Murray needed almost one and a half hours to nail the first set victory as he uppered in the tiebreak 8-6.

A frustrated Del Potro stood at the net for a while between the interval.

"Too much frustration. I couldn't believe that I lost that set, because I had many opportunities to win. I have been playing great, great points during the whole first set," said Del Potro.

"But this happens when you play against the No. 1 in the world. You never know when you can win a set or a match, and that happened today," he added.

The Scot, who finished a total of 44 winners and converted 6 of 17 break points, prevailed in the following two sets with 7-5, 6-0, spoiling his Argentine opponent's 100th victory in Grand Slam tournaments.

Wawrinka also endured a tiebreak in the opening set against Fabio Fognini, where he set at 7-2, before regrouping himself to win 6-0, 6-2 in two sets to follow.

The No. 7 seed Marin Cilic secured a last 16 spot in a much more comfortable manner, as he overcame Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 47 minutes.
