The 22 year-old from Sydney collected six birdies in his first eight holes before dropping a shot on the ninth to reach the turn at five under par.

"Yeah, I got off to a really good start, I was hitting the spots I was trying to hit. I have a couple of nice putt go in and had a couple of shots go really close. So it was just nice to have a nice start like that and keep it going," Cameron Davis said.

Former world number one Jason Day was playing his first tournament in his native Australia in four years.

Day shared third place on the leaderboard at five-under following a 66 with compatriots Alex Edge and former Australian PGA champion Nick Cullen.

Taylor MacDonald was outright second after a six-under par 65.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth bogeyed his first two holes and struggled to a one under par 70 and a share of 29th place.
