This came as 7th-seeded Shi Yuqi, also from China, defeated him 21-19, 16-21, 21-9 on the men's singles final of the event in Birmingham.

In spite of his victory, 22-year-old Shi Yuqi still honored his hero.

"I think Lin Dan is a great player regardless of whether I win or lose against him today, there are so many things I can learn from him," said Shi.

The men's singles' title was the only title which China was able to win during this year's All-England Open Championships.
