13-year-old Alysa Liu has made history as the youngest ever US women's national figure skating champion.

Despite her victory, Liu is too young to compete in the next three World Championships, which have a minimum entry age of 15.

The free skate competition was also the California-based teenager's first senior championships.

Liu's winning routine in Detroit included two triple axels, giving her a total score of 217.51 points.

The score put Liu almost four points ahead of 20-year old Bradie Tennell, who is the defending champion.
