6.2-magnitude quake strikes off Japan's Hachijojima island, no tsunami warning issued

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 struck off the coast of Japan's Hachijojima island on Thursday, the weather agency in Tokyo said.

There have been no reports of accidents or injuries as a result of the earthquake, according to local authorities.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor occurred at 6:43 p.m. local time, at a latitude of 32.4 degrees north and a longitude of 140.9 degrees east, with a depth of 20 km. 

The weather agency said the earthquake registered 3 on Japan's seismic scale which peaks at 7, in Aogashima village in the Hachijo Subprefecture.

Hachijojima is administered by Tokyo and located approximately 287 km south of the Special Wards of Tokyo.

The JMA did not issue a tsunami warning as a result of the offshore quake.
