In 2017, Global Blue purchased a 5 percent stake in EuroPass, which the company has now extended to 17 percent.

During that time, EuroPass has offered a series of “firsts” to Chinese travelers in Europe.

These include Tax Free refunds via Alipay available in 14 airports across Europe and Tax Free refund via WeChat Pay, recently launched at Madrid airport.

EuroPass has the ambition to become the main gateway for the growing number of European merchants wanting to access WeChat's services.

As more and more Chinese tourists choose to travel to Europe, the desire of retailers and service providers to be able to offer familiar payment options is obvious.

Jacques Stern, Global Blue CEO, commented:

“Through our collaboration with EuroPass, we are adapting to Chinese Globe Shoppers' purchasing habits to give them the best Tax Free Shopping experience.”

“Our increased investment is an important strategic move. It enables us to further innovate for travellers and develop our range of marketing services so that we can help affiliated merchants in more of our key European markets attract valuable Chinese Globe Shoppers.”
