UN chief calls for actions to honor Mandela's legacy

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday said that the best tribute to Nelson Mandela is "found in actions".

To observe Nelson Mandela International Day, which falls on July 18, the UN chief said that Mandela's message to the world is clear and "every one of us can step up and act for enduring change".

Describing Mandela as "an extraordinary global advocate for dignity and equality, and one of the most iconic and inspirational leaders of our time", Guterres said that Mandela exemplified courage, compassion and commitment to freedom, peace and social justice.

Mandela's calls for social cohesion and an end to racism are particularly relevant today, with hate speech casting a growing shadow around the world, he added. "As we work collectively for peace, stability, sustainable development and human rights for all, we would be well served to recall the example set by Nelson Mandela."

"On this day of reflection on Nelson Mandela's life and work, let us embrace his legacy and aspire to emulate his example," Guterres said in concluding his message.

Each year, the UN observes Nelson Mandela International Day by promoting and engaging in community service.

Mandela was born in July 1918 and died five years ago due to a respiratory infection. He had been imprisoned for 27 years for his role in the fight against apartheid and became the first black president of South Africa.
