A handout photo from March 15, 2019, by the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program shows the female orangutan during a surgery to remove the air rifle pellets from its body, in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The female orangutan was found with 74 air rifle bullets in its body. The animal's baby later died of malnutrition and dehydration. Its believed the animal was targeted by the local owner of a palm plantation which attempted to expel the animal from the property, according to an officer with the Aceh Conservation Agency. Palm plantations have been built on former tropical rainforests, causing the death and displacement of many species, among them the critically endangered orangutan, rhino, Sumatran tiger and Sumatran elephant.
