Pakistan had been an observer within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization since 2005. In June 2017, along with India, it was accepted as a full member of the SCO during the organization’s summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Ahead of the upcoming 2018 SCO summit, a Pakistani expert in international affairs has talked to CRI about the significance of the membership upgrade for his country.

Khalid Taimur Akram is the executive director of Islamabad-based think tank the Center for Global and Strategic Studies.

In an interview with CRI’s Victor Ning, Akram says Pakistan, with its experience in anti-terrorism, can now better work with other SCO members to jointly enhance regional security and stability, as well as contribute to greater regional connectivity under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative.
