US researchers to build hurricane-resistant homes
Studying hurricanes has fast become a crucial subject.
The IBHS Research Center in South Carolina is teaming up with wind engineers and design experts to build safer, stronger homes that are better able to resist strong winds and hurricanes.
Professor Forest Masters of the University of Florida School of Sustainable Infrastructure & Environment notes that with growing populations, evacuation will only become more difficult. "Evacuation is not going to be an option in the long term and we really need to be reassessing how we're designing homes and buildings to withstand wind effects, because at some point we're all going to have to shelter in place," he says.
